COL Black, PhD, MPH, HSPP, CHES, CPPE, FSBM, FASHA, FAAHB is Professor of Health Promotion; Health Sciences; Foods and Nutrition; and
Nursing at Purdue University. Randy earned his PhD at Stanford University and an MPH from San Diego State University. Before joining the
faculty of Purdue University, he held appointments at the Stanford University School of Medicine and as a member of the University of
Nebraska Medical Center faculty.
Randy has produced 2 books, 15 book chapters, and ~115 scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has made more than 185 professional
presentations, including many invited and keynote speeches to audiences in numerous countries around the globe. His nearly 20 grants and
contracts for which he has served as principal investigator, co-investigator, or project evaluator total $2 million in funding. He is among
the pioneers in the country to apply peer helping to health-related topics and elderly populations and promulgating the concept of peer
helping from "cradle to grave."
Randy's research was first to suggest the superiority of the efficacy of peer helping programs that followed the National Association of
Peer Programs (NAPP), formerly National Peer Helpers Association (NPHA), Programmatic Standards and Ethics which helped underscore the
uniqueness of NAPP and was motivation for a "blue ribbon" committee to update the NAPP Programmatic Standards and Ethics. Randy was the
longest running Editor of the Peer Facilitator Quarterly (PFQ) and is also a President-Emeritus of NAPP.
